History

Over the past 20 years Chemostrat have built an unrivaled understanding of analytical technology and interpretation of geochemical datasets. Our staff have a strong research record in the fields of sedimentary geochemistry, modern stratigraphic methodologies and sediment provenance, allowing the Group to develop a complete chemostratigraphy service from laboratory to wellsite.

The cornerstone of Chemostrat work remains characterization and correlation projects using ICP-OES/MS and XRF analyses. However, reflecting in-house capabilities the Company also offers a full range of mineralogical and sedimentological correlation tools. By combining these techniques with an ICP option, Chemostrat are able to supply a solution to almost any correlation problem and therefore possess the resources to provide an integrated stratigraphic service to the petroleum industry.

In the last two years the company has also developed a suite of portable analytical services that have enabled Chemostrat to offer their services in the field, in the core store and at wellsite.

Chemostrat ‘invented’ wellsite chemostratigraphy and teamed with Halliburton to establish the first wellsite service ‘LaserStrat®’ in 2002. Subsequently, Chemostrat entered into a 10 year alliance with HES and jointly more than 50 wellsite jobs were completed. In 2012, Chemostrat established our own wellsite service.

Traditionally, wellsite chemostratigraphy was used on conventional reservoirs to steer wells, and all of the ‘LaserStrat®’ wellsite jobs were completed on conventional reservoirs where wellsite chemostratigraphic data was used for chiefly stratigraphic correlation and geosteering. This application is increasingly being used on over 30 North Sea wells to date.

The dramatic increase in shale exploration where wellsite chemostratigraphy is used to steer wells and to model mineralogy for enhanced fracturing (real-time or onsite post-drilling analysis) has greatly expanded the market sector. In addition, Chemostrat has also developed a series of complimentary wellsite services such as FTIR (for mineralogy and organic content) and C-isotope analyzers for rock age correlations that will be packaged to provide a comprehensive stratigraphic and compositional wellsite service (particularly appropriate for shale plays).

To build on Chemostrat’s extensive experience in XRF wellsite analysis, the company has also developed a series of complimentary portable analytical techniques including HHXRF, FTIR, Magnetic Susceptibility, that form our ‘Portable Solutions’ brand. These services can be used in the laboratory, in the core store or in the field. In addition, some of these techniques can also be applied at wellsite to aid in geosteering and/or rapid onsite post drilling analysis in remote locations to generate data for fracture optimization to improve shale gas recovery. The services are ideally suited for analysis of shale resource plays such as the Wolfcampian (Midland Basin), the Eagleford, Haynesville, Bakken and Marcellus in US, the Duvernay in Canada and the Bowland shales in the UK and many others.
